Efficient Harvesting and Downstream Processing

As the culture reaches maturity, the focus shifts to harvesting and downstream processing. We develop harvesting strategies that are gentle on the cells yet effective in separating the biomass from the culture medium. Following harvesting, we and together with our partners, assist in establishing downstream processes that efficiently extract the desired products, whether they’re lipids for biofuels, pigments for colorants, or proteins for food supplements.

Efficient harvesting is the first step in downstream processing. We specialize in various methods such as membrane filtration, centrifugation, flocculation or flotation to concentrate the algal cells, optimizing recovery rates, purity and growth medium re-cycling.

Drying and Milling

Post-extraction, the biomass undergoes drying to remove moisture, which is essential for storage and further processing. Current used microalgae drying techniques are spray-drying, freeze-drying, and (solar-) oven drying techniques, each chosen based on the end-product requirements. The dried biomass is then milled to the specified particle size, ready for application in various industries.
